On 13 November 2024, the Cyprus Democratic Lawyers Association hosted an insightful online event titled, “Exploring Recent Developments: Ending Öcalan's Isolation.” The forum, centered on Abdullah Öcalan's current status and the broader movement advocating for his freedom, attracted a diverse audience from legal and human rights communities.
Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned Kurdish leader, has been held in isolation on İmralı Island in Turkey since his capture in 1999. The call for ending his isolation has been a longstanding plea by advocates for Kurdish rights and international human rights groups. The event underscored the potential paths toward securing Öcalan's freedom, with the theme, “Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan is Possible,” framing discussions.
The key speaker, Mr. Cengiz Yürekli, is a prominent advocate for Kurdish rights and an expert in international law. Yürekli’s presentation analyzed recent legal and political developments concerning Öcalan’s situation, contextualizing his ongoing detention within human rights frameworks. He highlighted the importance of sustained international pressure to address Öcalan's treatment and urged attendees to consider legal avenues that could support Öcalan's release.
The Cyprus Democratic Lawyers Association aims to continue fostering dialogue on this issue, with plans for future events exploring broader legal reforms and human rights advocacy. The association hopes that the discussions initiated during the event will inspire new approaches and solidarity among legal communities worldwide.
